The Job

As the Senior Manager, Engineering of the HBO Max Engagement organization, you will set the strategic direction for multiple teams and coach the managers and senior engineers you lead to build self-sustaining and highly motivated teams. You will take an active role in developing the careers of everyone in your organization. You will define metrics for success and clear the way for your teams to achieve and exceed them. You will foster and encourage diverse viewpoints and are able to harmonize discordant views.

The Engagement organization is responsible for HBO Max Recommendations, Personalization, Search, and Off-Platform Feeds. The decisions driven by these teams streamlines the content discovery process, exposing the customer to the depth of the catalog. The teams actively collaborate with data scientists to create machine learning models that are owned and operated by Engagement teams. The systems they build cover all of HBO Max, investing strategically in the area of most opportunity to apply data science to production use cases.

This role is at the forefront of delivering value to our customers by connecting them to relevant content both on-platform (within the app) and off-platform (through partner integrations). You will build systems that develop a deep understanding of your customers and apply that understanding to each customer’s discovery experience. You will use data to guide your investments and obsess over driving an increase in customer value as measured by viewer engagement. You will partner with research teams to iterate on modeling approaches and with Product Management to identify innovative applications of personalized experiences. You will grow your organization’s capabilities into a platform that can serve Warner Media’s direct to consumer products beyond HBO Max.

The Daily

  • Lead the Personalization, Search, and Off-Platform Discovery teams as the Senior Manager of the Engagement organization.
  • Manage managers who lead each individual team, helping to develop their careers and the careers of the engineers on their teams.
  • Guide your teams through technical and organizational challenges.
  • Deliver a per-customer discovery experience that delights customers across all surface areas and devices.
  • Collaborate with Product Management, Data Science, and Design teams to identify opportunities and drive them to delivery via your teams
  • Set the bar for quality. Your work serves as an example to others.
The Essentials
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • 10+ years of experience in software development, including 6+ years managing multiple software development teams comprised of software engineers and managers..
  • Experience on personalization, recommenders, and the search domain
  • Experience working directly with cross-functional stakeholders (engineers, leads, QA, designers and TPMs) to understand what they need, and how you can provide it
The Nice to Haves
  • A passion for research and exploration across an ambiguous domain, prioritizing customer experience while encouraging innovation.
  • 3+ years experience bringing machine learning models to production in a service-oriented environment
  • Experience evaluating machine learning models and approaches.
  • 3+ years working on Search-related technologies (Lucene, Elasticsearch, Solr, or an equivalent)
  • Experience with AWS or other cloud infrastructure providers. We maintain the infrastructure we operate.
  • Deep understanding of how to drive the maintainability, reliability, and scalability of software that you. You have opinions about the Right Way to write software, but are willing to explore others.
